Cleansing: Good Skincare Starts With Clean Skin

Chances are, if you’re reading this blog, you probably care about what your skin looks like, right?

Yeah, that’s what we thought.

But let’s be real for a second: achieving the skin of your dreams can be tough work. Not to mention, a potentially overwhelming process.

Between picking the right products, knowing when to apply them, and understanding what your skin actually needs, nailing your skincare down can feel like a process.

That’s why today we wanted to go back to the basics and talk to you a little bit about cleansing.

That’s right—cleansing. Probably the most basic and essential piece of the skincare puzzle, without this step, you’re seriously missing out.

So first…

Why is cleansing so important?

Cleansing is key to your skincare routine because it lays the foundation for all the rest of your products. In other words, you could be using the best moisturizer and serum combo imaginable, but if you’ve skipped your cleanser or you’re using a poor product, well, then those good products aren’t going to do much for you (or, at least, they won’t be fulfilling their full potential).

Not to mention, your cleanser is the product that ensures your face is clean prior to applying any other products. Clean skin ensures that your other products can do their job properly and that you’re not rubbing dirt, oil, and bacteria into your face as you apply those additional products.

What should I look for in a cleanser?

Picking your cleanser is largely going to depend on your skin type and skincare concerns.

In order to get you started in picking that perfect cleanser, here are some of our best tips:

- If you have dry skin…

Pick a cleanser that is gentle and non-foaming. This helps ensure you don’t strip the skin and cause further irritation and dryness. You can also look for cleansers that are formulated for sensitive skin since these cleansers are also usually good options for dry skin.

- If you have oily skin

Pick a cleanser that has a foaming action to it. The foam will help dissolve dirt and oil so that your skin looks more matte and less shiny.

- If you have acne-prone skin

Pick a cleanser that is formulated for sensitive skin. The most important component of picking out skincare products for those with acne-prone skin is to ensure you don’t further irritate the acne. This means looking for gentle, calming products that won’t further add inflammation to your already irritated skin.

When should I apply cleanser?

Can you ever cleanse too much? Yes.

Does this mean you should ever skip cleansing sessions? No.

Instead, stick to cleansing twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. This ensures you start the day with a freshly cleansed face, and also that you go to bed with clean skin (this is especially important if you wore makeup throughout your day).

The only exception is if you’ve gone to the gym or you’ve worked up a sweat. This is why it is ideal to workout in the morning or at night so you can simply cleanse as normal. If this is not possible, be sure you’re using a gentle cleanser, and when sweat is more minimal, try to use lukewarm water to wash your face (never add soap as this will irritate your skin).
