How To Choose The Best Exfoliant For Your Skin Type

A common misconception that we often see talked about in the world of skincare is the importance of scrubbing your face. Nope, nope, nope, stop doing that. Trust us, the more you roughly scrub at your face, the more likely it is that you’ll encounter breakouts, fine lines, and redness. No thanks!

To combat this, we always recommend our customers gently cleanse their face using soft, gentle motions.

Of course, though, exfoliating is still a very worthy skincare practice that can help brighten and tighten your skin. The key to exfoliating properly is all about being gentle, staggering how often you exfoliate, and, most importantly, ensuring you’re using the right exfoliant for your skin type.

Not sure which exfoliator is best for your skin type? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

Read on to figure out which exfoliant is best for your skin type:

Best exfoliant for sensitive skin

This is probably the skin type that should be most concerned with what exfoliant they’re using.

Why?

Because, as mentioned, if you’re being rough with your skin, it can lead to unwanted blemishes and wrinkles. In particular, for those with sensitive skin, acne can be quite a problem, because acne almost always is the result of irritated skin.

If you’re using an exfoliant made from tough beads or harsh acids, there’s a good chance you’ll irritate your skin, resulting in unwanted acne.

Instead, look for exfoliants made from natural ingredients, and specifically look for products that are formulated for sensitive skin. Our  MARS Exfoliating Cleanser is a good option here because the exfoliant is made from jojoba beads and hibiscus petals, which are especially gentle. Rest assured, all Jolicoeur products are always made from  natural, organic, top-of-the-line ingredients

Best exfoliant for dry skin

No doubt about it, dry skin is a common concern that many women face.

So,  how can you combat your dry skin? Well, there are plenty of solutions, but one easy way is through regular exfoliating.

Remember: Dry skin won’t just remove itself naturally. You have to actively remove that buildup of dry skin if you want to avoid breakouts.

However, there are a couple of things you’ll want to keep in mind when choosing an exfoliant for dry skin. In particular, try to avoid exfoliants with alcohol. These harsher ingredients will only irritate your skin and further dry it out. Instead, look for hydrating ingredients, and only exfoliate once or twice a week.

Best exfoliant for oily skin

Oily skin, what a pain, right? We hear you loud and clear, and that’s why we want to encourage you to start exfoliating more regularly. Regular exfoliation can help in reducing some of that oil buildup. Yes, please!

When looking for an exfoliant for oily skin, your skin has a stronger tolerance for more active ingredients. For example, things like salicylic acid and glycolic acid can really help reduce oil (our  MARS exfoliating Cleanser has both!)

Best exfoliant for combination skin

If you have combination skin, you’ll want to worry less about what exfoliant you use and more about what areas of your face you exfoliate.

For instance, oftentimes, combination skin will result in dry patches on the cheeks and an oily T-zone. If this is you, keep exfoliation concentrated to your oily T-zone. This will help soak up some of that unwanted oiliness while keeping your cheeks free from over-irritation.

Which exfoliant do you need for your skin?

When in doubt about which exfoliant to go with, we always recommend a more gentle and natural option. You don’t want to over-irritate your skin by using harsh ingredients or exfoliating too often.

Try out our  MARS Exfoliating Cleanser, and we’ve got a feeling you’ll soon be singing the praises of a gentle exfoliator.
