How To Find The Best Skincare Routine

When it comes to developing an effective skincare routine, if you’ve read our blog posts before, then you’re probably well aware of the fact that, in our books,a simple skincare routine is always best

Cleanser, moisturizer, and high-quality serum. After that, everything is just icing on the cake. And, to be honest, the more icing you add, the more likely it is that your skin will have a negative reaction, resulting in pimples and blemishes.

No thank you!

Having said that, we recognize that even with a simple skincare routine there tends to be some variation in what products work best for different skin types, so today we’re going to help guide you through how to find the best skincare routine for you.

Sit back, relax, and get ready to be inspired with your skincare routine.

Step 1: Identify your skin type

If you’re not already aware, first things first, it’s important to know what your skin type is.

Dry, oily, combination, normal, or sensitive-- you’ll want to find products that are specifically formulated to suit your skin type.

If you’re not certain or your skin seems to vary day-by-day, we recommend seeking out products that are developed with sensitive skin in mind. These products tend to be best for avoiding negative reactions.

Step 2: Decide what YOU need

While we could certainly tell you that a cleanser, moisturizer, and serum is enough, for some, having more products in your skincare arsenal might be necessary.

For instance, if you’re struggling with acne, you’ll likely want to have some type of acne focused product in your skincare routine, like our UNICORN Acne Clarifying Face Mist

If your skin tends to be oily, having some type of exfoliating cream will likely do you good to soak up that extra oil. In particular, we recommend seeking out a gentle exfoliant, like ourDIAMANT Diamond Infused Brightening Scrub, and only using it minimally. Exfoliating too much can lead to skin irritation, which can lead to breakouts.

And, if dry skin is a particular concern, you might want to have a specific night cream that is specifically designed to restore moisture back to your skin while you sleep. Even something like a body butter can work wonders for dry skin (ourRICH GIRL Healing Whipped Body Butter is particularly great for dealing with eczema).

Step 3: Nail down the proper skincare routine order

Now that you have all your skincare products, you’re one step closer to the perfect skincare routine…

BUT

If you’re not applying your skincare products in the right order, you’re not doing yourself any favors.

And so, make sure you’re going in this order to ensure the most effective skincare routine: cleanser, serum, moisturizer. This is essential because cleanser preps the canvas, serum delivers hydration deep into the pores, and moisturizer locks everything in.

For anything extra like masks, exfoliants, peels, and retinol, be careful with how often you’re adding these products into your routine. For things like masks and exfoliants, we recommend adding 1-2 times per week. For more intense treatments like retinol or chemical peels, you’ll want to be very liberal with use, only using on an as-needed basis.

Do you have a skincare routine?

Beyond these three simple steps, coming up with your skincare routine really shouldn’t be too complicated. Once you’ve found your ideal cleanser, moisturizer, and serum, you’ve essentially got your routine down.

Keep it simple and you’re well on your way to glowing skin.
